Email Design Optimization

GOALS

My mission is to strengthen the visual impact and effectiveness of a company’s email marketing campaigns by auditing past materials, identifying design improvements, and creating polished mock-ups. I seek to boost response and click rates by refining the overall design, while also establishing professional, reusable templates that set a consistent visual standard for future campaigns.

MY ROLE

Analyzed past email campaigns, researched industry examples, redesigned emails in InDesign, and created and presented a report to staff.

TIMELINE

June 2025 to September 2025

Research and Analysis

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

I researched email designs from other companies in similar industries to identify strong visual strategies. This included studying how they used brand colors, typography, and imagery to draw attention and guide readers through the content. These external examples helped shape my approach by revealing best practices for email readability and engagement.

REVIEWING PAST CAMPAIGNS

With these examples in mind, I completed a thorough audit of previous marketing emails to understand their visual structure and communication effectiveness. I analyzed elements such as layout, hierarchy, branding, and calls to action to identify what worked and what weakened engagement. This phase provided a clear baseline for improvement and helped define consistent design goals. I collected screenshots of the original emails, highlighting issues such as unclear hierarchy, inconsistent color usage, and visually weak CTAs.

Redesign and Mock-Up Creation

DESIGNING USING INDESIGN

Using Adobe InDesign, I redesigned the emails with an emphasis on readability, brand cohesion, and scannability. I refined font hierarchies, introduced more consistent color usage, and highlighted key offers with clear, visually distinct buttons.

BEFORE AND AFTER COMPARISON

Each redesigned email was compared side-by-side with its original version to demonstrate visual and functional improvements. These changes aimed to make each email easier to read, more on-brand, and more likely to catch a reader’s eye in a crowded inbox.

CREATING THE FINAL REPORT

I compiled all findings, redesigned mock-ups, and key takeaways into a polished visual report. The document outlined recurring design issues, explained my design decisions, and proposed reusable visual templates for future campaigns.

REFLECTION

This project taught me how small visual decisions can make a big difference in communication. By analyzing and redesigning each email, I learned how hierarchy, color, and spacing can guide the reader’s eye and shape their response. It also helped me grow more confident presenting design work in a professional context by explaining not just how something looks better, but why it performs better. Overall, the experience grew my understanding of how visual design and marketing strategy intersect to create more effective content.
